30 degree Acute Angle Tooling

Acute angle tooling refers to press brake punches and dies designed with an included angle of less than 90 degrees—most commonly 30°, 45°, or 60°. It is commonly used for making a 30-degree bend prior to hemming.

Acute angle press brake dies is considered the most versatile setup for air bending because it allows the operator to form a wide range of angles with a single tool set.

Acute Angle Tooling Key Functions & Uses

  • Universal Air Bending: A 30° acute punch and die set can form any angle between 30° and 180° (flat bend) by adjusting the depth of the ram. This eliminates the need to change tools for different bend angles. and it allows the operator to compensate for material “springback” especially in stainless steel to achieve a perfect 90° or 45° final bend.
  • Hemming (Flattening): Acute angle press brake dies is required for the first stage of a hem. The sheet is first bent to an acute angle (e.g., 30°), and then flattened in a second operation to create a safe, folded edge.
  • Springback Compensation: To achieve a perfect 90° bend in materials with high “springback” (like stainless steel), the metal must be over-bent to approximately 88° or 85°. Acute tooling provides the necessary clearance to bend past 90° without the sheet colliding with the die. The acute tools allow for an “over-bend” of up to 60 degrees, which is a key technical requirement for high-precision fabrication.

  • Tonnage Limits for Acute Tooling:When using Acute Angle Tooling (30°/35°), the concentrated force on the sharp tip is significantly higher than on a standard punch.

Why Acute  Press brake dies Requires Lower Tonnage

  • Concentrated Stress: In a standard 88° punch, the force is distributed over a wider shoulder. In a 30° acute punch, the force is concentrated on a very narrow point. This is why we recommend Deep Air Bending rather than bottoming.
  • Springback Compensation: Acute angle tooling is designed for over-bending. For example, to achieve a 90° bend in high-tensile stainless steel, you may need to bend to 85°. The 30° tool provides the “clearance” to do this without the material hitting the punch’s side-flanks.
  • Lateral Force Risk: Acute angle tooling is more sensitive to “Side-Loading.” Ensure your sheet metal is perfectly centered; if the load is offset, the thin profile of an acute punch can snap.
