How to calculate die clearance for punch press?

Calculating die clearance correctly is the most effective way to extend tool life, reduce machine tonnage, and ensure high-quality parts. Die clearance is the difference between the size of the punch and the size of the die opening.

In sheet metal punching, clearance is almost always calculated as a percentage of the material thickness.

Total Clearance = Material Thickness x Clearance Percentage
